BSAC Oxygen Administration
As a diver you’ve probably attended First Aid training, during which you’ll have learned the benefit of delivering rescue breaths to a non breathing patient. But did you know that by administrating rescue breaths together with enriched oxygen content you can increase the effectiveness of this technique? Furthermore, in the case of most diving related accidents, the administration of oxygen can also be of benefit when treating such conditions. This course will show you how oxygen can be used as a first aid treatment for treating divers and diving related incidents, the safe guards of administrating 100% oxygen and the limitations of oxygen treatment. The course is designed for divers and people who are involved with diving activities for example; deckhands and surface support teams etc. This is 1 -day course and it consists of both theory and practical lessons. The course concludes with an evaluation in both of these areas. All candidates on completion of the course will receive a set of student notes and an Oxygen Administrator certification card.

There are 5 theory lessons in total, with the first one starting with a overview of the course, before moving on to review the Basic Life Support(BLS) techniques and recovery positions. We then take a look at some of the most common diving incidents; we will look at the causes of each incident, the signs and symptoms and how oxygen administration can benefit the First aid procedures when treating the patient. Next, we examine the different types of oxygen equipment that is generally used in diving situations. We cover oxygen cylinders, cylinder labeling and color coding, oxygen demand valves and the different types of delivery systems and their uses before finishing the lesson discussing oxygen equipment storage cases. The next section covers how to administrate oxygen to the diver, evacuation procedures and reporting, the limitations of oxygen use, what happens when the oxygen supply has been exhausted and safety considerations when administrating oxygen. On completion of the above lessons, the instructor will evaluate you on your currently level of knowledge with a short multi-choice test On completion of the above theory lessons, current BSAC divers can have the relevant theory lessons of the Dive Leader course signed off in their qualification log books.
The practical lessons cover 3 areas, which will includes, BLS review, the use of a pocket mask and administration of Oxygen in practice. At the same time as the above theory test a practical assessment will also take place, in which the Instructor will give you a number of practical scenarios to complete. On successfully completing both theory and practical assessments, you will be awarded the BSAC Oxygen Administrator Award.
