BSAC First Aid for Divers Course

first aid front 15 001 300x189 BSAC First Aid for Divers

This course is not like any other traditional First Aid course. BSAC’s First Aid for Divers course is aimed specifically for First Aid Treatment within a diving environment and to make use of any resources that are likely to be available at the time. This will involve using scuba diving or boat equipment as an improvisation to that of a traditional First Aid Kit. We can use such equipment to dress and splint wounds, control bleeding injuries, as well as treating many other types of medical emergencies.

For example; during the course you will learn how to splint a broken arm with a BDC, control bleeding with the use of neoprene products, use fins and snorkels has splints and even make a stretcher out of a wetsuit. There are so many other possible improvisation techniques using common diving and boating equipment.

This course duration is 1-day, and is open to BSAC Sports Divers or above.

All student notes and the BSAC First Aid for Divers certification card are included.

Theory Lessons

There are 8 theory lessons in total. The first lesson starts with a look at the principles and priority of First Aid.  The next 6 – lessons will cover the different types of injuries, the causes of such injuries and how to treat each one of them. This includes, wounds and bleeding, burns (e.g. burns from, Liveaboard galleys , acids burns from small power boats batteries, rope burns etc), broken bones and limbs, miscellaneous injuries such as barotraumas, seasickness and blast injuries are also covered.

Practical Lessons

In the practical lessons, we look at Casualty Examinations in order to assess what injuries maybe present. We then move on to bandaging wounds using a variety of diving/ boat equipment. The use of the body’s pressure points to control bleeding, treating open fractures and how to immobilize the affected limb will also be covered plus the safe moving the casualty.

The first aid approach of this course is to promote open- minded thinking of how to treat the casualty effectively by improvisation and using any means available.
